Visingsö Slott - Visingsö, Sweden

Semester time!Yippie 💃💃(so as you can see its me and Matthias, we're dancing with so much joy! Lol!) Well, don't be confused if I always say SEMESTER 😉 yeah! I know! it sounds weird that I'm happy about the word "Semester" right? Lol!  Because it only means schooling session in my home country but here in Sweden "SEMESTER" means VACATION!

picture from google maps
But let's talk about our semester again where we spend one whole day tour in Visingsö Island. This Island is located in southern half of Sweden's second largest lake called Lake Vättern. It is 30 kilometers north of city Jönköping and it take us 2hrs drive to get there. There you can see lots of  beautiful scenery, relaxing nature and amazing wildlife. A perfect summer destination too here in Sweden.

You can also see the ruins of Visingsö slott/Visingsborg Castle (picture above) and Näs castle, which was the residence for the Swedish monarchy in the 12th and 13th centuries. In able to visit the island you need to ride a boat between Gränna and Visingsö that leaves regularly especially on a summer months and takes around 25 minutes ride. You can also bring your car on the ferry but you need to book your place in advance.

Inside the ferry that will taking us to Visingsö
While on board, the ferry is really nice and you can sit comfortably inside or just enjoy a boat trip out on the deck. (picture above is the beautiful summer view of Lake Vättern).

Here are some photos we have from our Visingsö tour:

This Island is well suited for a bike ride, bikes are available for rent at several places so you can enjoy the whole place.

Take a trip with the island's popular horse-drawn carriages called Remmalagen (picture above), and visit Kumlaby Church and get up in the tower via the staggering stairs (picture below).

Kumlaby Church
They say you can go up in the church tower from where you have an excellent view over Visingsö. Even though the church were closed that day and we didn't get a chance to experience it still the view outside the church is amazing and peaceful!

There are so many thing you can do in the island you can visit one of the restaurants there, rent a bike to discover the island from the saddle, you can camping with your friends, stroll in the lakes, check in a nice hotel or simply do a day tour (just like what we did). Although it sound so nice I wound't recommend the day tour because the time is so limited and rush (traveling there consume already your time so you need to rush in everything). In able to enjoy fully the whole Island is that you need to stay there for one day or two hehehe.

In the harbor you can discover Visingsborg castle ruins. Visingsborg Castle date from 1560s. It was square formed with a moat four towers. The Brahe Family lived in Visingsborg Castle during the 16th and 17th centuries. During their time it was one of the most impressive buildings in Sweden. Sculptures and paintings embellished the walls and a large number of books filled the library. The castle also had an armoury that equipped up to 800 soldiers. Outside the walls were large orchards and gardens. The Visingsborg Castle was empty for several years after the death of Count Per Brahe the Younger in 1680. Later, in the early 18th century, it was used as a camp for Russian war prisoners. It is said that it was these prisoners who finally burnt down the castle in 1718. What is left today is only the left wing and now a there's lot of renaissance events are held there every year and is one of the many beautiful and historical things still on the island!

What a beautiful view!
They also planted oak trees on Visingsö in the 17th century to provide strategically important timber for future ship construction. (You can see lots of it if you ride the horse-drawn carriages) The timber is now ready but no longer required for ship construction. Consequently, Visingsö is partially covered by oak forests, the rest being farmland. If you’re ever a tourist here, make sure you don’t miss it! It so beautiful. Visingsö has a lot to offer! We will return back next semester and we'll make sure to stay there for a couple of days hehe! Till next time guys!!

Vadstena Castle - Östergötland, Sweden [Short Trip Video]

Vadstena Castle is the best preserved Renaissance castles. If you love renaissance architecture you will definitely like this castle. It nice to know the history behind this majestic place :) This castle has been very well preserved and you can see it on the wall, ceiling and painting inside. Interesting to know. Just make sure to get a guided tour to understand it well. You might find it boring if you are alone but the surroundings are really nice especially the lake Vättern on the Summer time. Don't forget to visit this place and include on your castle bucket list :)

Göteborg Naturhistoriska Museet - Sweden

Beautiful quotes to share 📖 :
"A visit to a museum is a search for beauty, truth and meaning in our lives. Go to museums as often as you can" 🏢🏢 🎫🎫 😊

Watch me as I explore the beauty of this big place called Göteborg Naturhistorisk Museet. Be amazed how cool and interesting all the display there :)

Me standing in front of Göteborgs Naturhistoriska Museum

This place is so amazing! If you like a museum with stuffed animals and all about botany and biology kind of stuff! This museum is just exactly for you. This place is so big and many rooms to look for. There are lots of stuffed animals! elephant and the big whale called "Malm the Blue Whale" and its awesome! It said to be the only stuffed blue whale in the world. It is enormous and the history of it on how they make it possible is really interesting and unbelievable. Worth a visit!

Whenever I hear the word GEKÅS ULLARED it always makes my heart skip happy and jump to the highest level LOL because it only means SHOPPING TIME!! Who doesn't like shopping! right? 😉

If we have Divisoria in Philippines here in Sweden they have place called Gekås Ullared. Every Swede knows what Gekås Ullared is,it is the biggest and cheapest store to buy stuff in Sweden. Aside of that! When I first came here in Sweden, everyone I met used to ask me if I have ever been there before (guess what? one of that is my mother in law LOL!) She loved Ullared so much and so do I!.

CARLSTENS FORTRESS - Marstrand, Sweden

This spring season we had a chance to visit this beautiful Island of Marstrand. We did a day tour exploring the whole Island and visit the majestic Carlstens Fästning (Carlsten Fortress). It is located on the Island of Marstrand about 45 kilometer northwest of Gothenburg and it takes around 1hr and 35mins drive where we live (Grästorp). You need to ride a ferry that located in Koön, it goes every quarter in daytime and during the night it goes every half an hour. The ferry is really modern and nice plus you can also go out on the upper deck if you wanted to see the beautiful view of . It only takes a couple of minutes boat ride 😊. You can buy the ticket inside the store that is close to the port area and it goes two-way ticket already from(Kaoön to Marstand to Koön).

Off to visit Carlsten Fortress
Unfortunately, that time we didn't get a chance to book for a tourist guide but you can check and roam around the  fortress and walk on your own provided that you pay for your entrance ticket. You can also buy booklet, maps and guided books in the entrance and don't worry if you can't understand Swedish because they offer English guided tour and guided books that available in several languages.
For guided tour and entrance fee you can visit their site: Carlsten Fortress opening hours and fees

The Carlsten Fortress (Carlsten Fästning)  was built in 1700's to protect the island from invaders and it was once a military and prison facility built to safeguard Marstrand before. Nowadays, it is one of the most favorite tourist attractions here in Sweden and I'm totally agree to that because the place is really beautiful, nice and peaceful! I recommend to visit it on a summer season although they offer lots of activity all year around 😉 its up to you to decide.

The weather was really nice when we visit the place, it's not too hot nor not to cold just so perfect to walk around and enjoying the beautiful view of Marstrand up on the hill where the fortress is.  The thick wall of the fortress is really impressive and it will leave you wondering how much time, effort and energy they spend building it before, such an interesting piece of history and what more if you see what is inside of the fortress.

The most famous prisoner at Carlsten fortress was Lasse-Maja. Lasse-Maja was a successful thief during their time. He was so popular because he’d disguise himself as a woman to avoid captivity. He was arrested and sentenced to lifetime 1813 Marstrand's work. Thanks to the cooking skills he learned that "woman" was serving Lasse-Maja large parts of his sentence as a chef. In 1839, after 26 years in captivity at Carlsten, he was pardoned by King Karl XIV Johan.

The most amazing views of Marstrand is from the top of Carlsten Fortress. What a picturesque view!
Dragging the stone to the construction was hard work. To get enough labor introduced a new sentence in the Swedish law: "Marstrand's work". From all over the country were then criminals that would be included in the workforce. They were murderers, big thieves, counterfeiters and rapists, but also easier for criminals like little thieves and vagrants. Sentence length varied from a few years to lifetime. To prevent escapes, the prisoners were provided with a tvåkilos birdo attached with chains around one ankle. Awkward and escape-prone inmates could get to wear a so-called Iron Crown, a lockup that could weigh up to 36 kg. The hard work and the miserable living conditions meant that the mortality rate was high. Some winters died up to 20 percent of the prisoners. Marstrand's work was abolished in 1854, and most of the prisoners were moved to Gothenburg.

(Here are some of the pictures we took on our tour  to show you how beautiful the place is!)

In the days of Charles X, when they were built, they served as the main entrance to the fortress. The gates are decorated with appropriate inscriptions and royal arms. Before there was a drawbridge
Outhouse in medieval style is on the walls of the Upper Courtyard (see picture above). Garrison's waste products dumped straight into the dry moat.

The place is really beautiful and  relaxing! It is a popular summer destination here in Sweden and if you get a chance to visit Gothenburg area, don't hesitate to add this place on your bucket list to visit!. A worth of time to reflect and relax away from the stressful city life!.   Not only that the island is so small that you can easily walk around and check the entire place in just whole day 😉 . There are lots of cafe, restaurant and hotel  too to check around if you'd like to stay there for couple of  more days.  Me and my husband we're planning to go back there next summer to enjoy more the place! We will definitely go back and visit it again!

Gripsholm Castle - Mariefred,Sweden

Gripsholm Castle is located in Mariefred, on the lake Mälaren, about an hour drive from Stockholm and 3 hours drive from Grästorp (where I live now lol).Last week my husband and I recently had the pleasure to visit and check this castle but our original plan is to wander around Stockholm and guess what!! we ended up checking the Gripsholm Castle instead and we didn't regret it at all :) the trip was well worth it we didn't bother the long butt-aching drive from Grästorp.I asked the lady in the front desk if it's okey to take a picture inside and they said "yes" (just to make sure lol!)
The mighty tower of Gripsholm Castle
The Castle itself is really beautiful and magnificent. Very well preserved and really kept in a good condition with many rooms to see. Also known as Gustav Vasa's Castle. It is one of the finest remaining example of Swedish architecture of the Vasa dynasty founded by King Gustav and combines with renaissance interiors but still remains essentially medieval. It has a fantastic view from the lake-side. The ground is absolutely calm and peaceful its good to walk and feel the breezy air after we have been inside the castle.
Old brown bricks is so beautiful! and a fairy-tale style well like this is lovely
